I wonder, God,
how you stand existing
within my tired frame,
worn and cracked
from too many taut days -
ah, but then, I realize,
this is all my illusion,
Sometimes this spiritual quest gets
too complex, and I am the first to
forget the basics; that is, being
prepared to connect with God, in
the present, through meditation,
prayer, and contemplation.
It is within these meditative moments
where we master the skill of mind
control, clearing away the debris of
our egos and our noisy lives, to meet
the true consciousness of God, always
ready and waiting in the now.
So when I came across the note
featured below from 2014, I decided
to publish it, as a gentle reminder,
to all of us, of the basics.
THE FIRST STEP
The power to clear the consciousness
is available to everyone, simply by
using the techniques and approaches
honed by thousands of years of earnest
effort, one errant thought at a time.
It is basic meditation practice, with its
focus on the breath, returning to this
breath when thoughts surface – allowing
us to lay the foundation, training our
minds, so our awareness during practice
will determine the flow and focus of our
For some, this may be the first experience
with mind control – allowing thoughts
to surface, but upon review, choosing
to withdraw attention, returning instead
to the breath and our meditative focus,
thus laying the groundwork for a breath
focused mindfulness, available during
meditative practice, or anytime we choose
mindfulness as our criterion for awareness.
