A key Hindu teaching is to renounce the outcome and instead enjoy
the pursuing, often phrased as "Renounce and Enjoy". The guidance
offered in this powerful sentiment is that those who are compulsively
attached to the results of their action, the outcome, cannot really
enjoy what they do; they get downcast when things do not work out
and cling more desperately when they do.
Having spent most of my career in "corporate America" I learned
quickly that only results mattered and have found this a hard habit
to break. So now I write Affirmative Thoughts like the one below
as a reminder that when I am entangled in the outcome and find
myself lost in the striving, no matter what the result, there is
only anguish waiting for me in the wings.
ENTANGLED IN THE OUTCOME
It is often in the striving that we
become entangled in the outcome –
focused on the results, the goal
and miss the relevance and message
of the journey itself – neglect the
lessons revealed, the experiences
offered, the wonders presented.
It is often in the striving that we
forget the living – focused on doing
rather than being we miss the point
as we miss the moment – with our
eyes on the prize we step over
the diamonds on the path losing
ourselves in our own momentum.
It is often in the striving that we
must realize that it is the pursuit
not what we are pursuing which
offers us the opportunity – enables
us to evolve and find our heaven.
